Be Prepared for Dental Emergencies
An emergency, by definition, is unexpected. You can’t plan for it. You can’t schedule an appointment in advance, and you don’t have time to search for the best dentist. Knowing where you will go for dental care is the first step in emergency preparedness. The premier choice for quality dental care is Dr. Lee Sheldon, of Solid Bite SM.
Dr. Sheldon is qualified to handle even complex dental emergencies. He is a board-certified periodontist, and skilled dental surgeon. His experience includes serving as a dental officer at the U.S. Army War College. Whether your emergency is as simple as a sudden toothache, or as complex as oral trauma resulting in broken and dislodged teeth, you can rest assured knowing that your dental care is in good hands.
Dental first aid
Like medical emergencies, the first step in treatment is usually at home (or wherever the emergency occurs). When you stock your first-aid kit, don’t forget to include a few dental supplies.
- Gauze, which you probably already have in your first-aid supplies, can be used to apply pressure and stop bleeding.
- Clove oil can be applied topically for temporary pain relief.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers should be aspirin free, to avoid accelerating bleeding.
- Periodontal wax can be used to secure a broken wire on braces.
- Dental cement can be used to temporarily fill the cavity left by a lost filling, or secure a loose crown.
Preventing emergencies
Some common emergencies are avoidable. Most notably, oral injury can often be prevented by wearing a mouth guard while playing sports, or engaging in other high risk activates. Also, avoid habits like holding hard objects between your teeth, or opening bottles with your teeth. You may think infection, abscess, and sudden toothaches cannot be avoided, but these problems are often related to damaged teeth, or periodontal disease. Regular dental care, cleanings, and treatment if needed, can stop recurring toothaches, and prevent many new ones.
Of course, there are many unavoidable emergencies. That is one of the reasons residents are fortunate to have access to the superior quality care of Dr. Sheldon. If you need routine, complex, or emergency dental care – call us!
